Popular weight loss and diabetes drugs like Wegovy, Ozempic, and Zepbound are reducing the appetites of some consumers, leading to a decrease in spending on dining out and groceries. About 63% of those taking these medications, known as GLP-1s, report spending less on restaurant meals and takeout. By 2035, an estimated 31.5 million Americans, around 9% of the population, will be taking GLP-1s. Healthier fast-casual restaurants like Cava, Chipotle, Sweetgreen, and Starbucks are better positioned to adapt, while "more indulgent" options like Jack in the Box, Wendy’s, McDonald’s, Wingstop, and Shake Shack could face pressure. Consumption of certain foods like ice cream, cakes, cookies, candy, chocolate, frozen pizzas, chips, and regular sodas may decline by 4% to 5%, along with an expected 3% decrease in alcohol consumption.
